Help your picky eater during the holidays

The holidays are full of great moments of gathering, but if you're the parent of a picky eater, it can feel like stepping onto a minefield. You may have your routines for packing kid-friendly food for every occasion, but how will you help your child through the high stakes of family holiday meals?

Here are some tips:

  • Make mealtimes (even holiday ones) as predictable as possible. Children may feel anxious when they're off their typical schedule. Routines around mealtime are immensely important for picky eaters. As far as you are able, prepare your child in advance for what to expect and how to navigate a temporary, new routine.

  • Don't let emotions get in the way. We know this is easier said than done, but the added social pressure of family holiday meals can push a picky eater over the edge, causing them to shut down entirely or feel ashamed for not eating everything. Be a safe space for your child when they're faced with food decisions. As a parent, it's important to remain neutral when children refuse food: sometimes, picky eaters are pushing buttons or asking for attention; be present and focus on what you can do to help.

  • Offer options and don't force choices. Children may panic if they feel they don't like or want anything they're being offered to eat. This may not be the time to take a firm stance that they "try everything." Rather, could they try something? Could you negotiate a taste? Offer these options, but don't force your child to clean their plate.

There are two reminders we'd like to give:

First, we like to remind Bloom members and parents that picky eating isn't just about your child being particular: there may be underlying reasons your child doesn't want or like certain things. It's important that you get to the root cause of their aversions, which may include treatment for sensory processing disorder or other conditions.

Second, remember that even though relatives may want your child to try every dish they bring, it's important to let your child choose. This is empowering, honoring, and ultimately affirms their value as a person with preferences.
