The 15th annual Holiday Craft Fair, hosted by the Fremont County 4-H Club, will feature more than 30 vendors and many opportunities to get Christmas shopping done early.
The event will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the 4-H building located at 1595 S. Ninth St.
The proceeds from the craft will go to both 4-H clubs and 4-H council and will also act to support more than 40 kids as they go to camps throughout the coming year. Children, ages 11 to 18, attend leadership, summer, spring break and discover mini-camps throughout the state and country and 4-H works tirelessly to assist them.
The different 4-H clubs in the local area will pick up soup meal vouchers and 50% of those tickets sold will go toward the club's interest and future. The soup meal is $8 and consists of all-you-can-eat soup, bread and a drink for lunch and dinner, and there is no time limit to buy the soup tickets. The 4-H families make the soups, and there will be a wide variety for patrons.
Jewelry, wooden art, mugs and coasters, ornaments, hand-sewn items, wreaths, and many other items will be available for purchase. Each vendor will provide a door prize, which means 30 different prizes will be up for grabs between the two-day fair. Many vendors are locally owned businesses that residents may see at other events, such as the Blossom Festival and others are booths constructed by members of 4-H themselves.
"We have some clubs that will buy a vendor's spot and they'll make crafts and sell them as a fundraiser to help their club out," said 4-H Youth Development Specialist Julianne Dinkel. "Our Creative Kids Club does that. They'll have their Sunday-Funday's and they'll meet every Sunday to make crafts for the craft fair."
In addition to the fun of the fair, cinnamon rolls and sticky buns will be available for pickup. Baked by members of the 4-H council, prices are $3 a roll, $15 for half dozen, and $30 per dozen. The deadline to order either confectionery treat is Dec. 1. Those who want to order cinnamon rolls or sticky buns, can call the extension office at 719-276-7390.
Despite the obvious fun that the craft fair brings to 4-H kids, the value of such an event can hardly be put into words. Between 20 and 30 children are expected to partake in the fair and the life skills necessary to succeed will come into play.
"For our 4-H council members, it's a big leadership builder. They'll go to the radio and they'll record some of the advertising, they'll sell tickets and items," Dinkel said. "It builds those public speaking skills so as far as leadership and getting connected with the community those are skills that we really want to encourage in 4-H."
Santa himself will make an appearance from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and will be available to take pictures and interact with the kids.
"It's a really fun event so we really hope people will come out and attend," Dinkel said. "It's fun to come and check out the craftspeople are making."
