The Importance of Updating Your Insurance Information Every New Year

A new year brings fresh starts, new goals and a reset for many insurance plans. If your health insurance runs on a calendar-year cycle, January marks the point when deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums, and visit limits reset. That's why it's especially important to provide your updated insurance information at the beginning of the year.

1. Deductibles Reset Every January

For most calendar-year plans, your deductible returns to $0 met on January 1st. This means you will once again be responsible for the full cost of covered services until your deductible is met. If you notice your cost-share increase at the start of the year, this is likely why. It's part of the normal annual cycle. Once the deductible is met, you will likely have a copay, which is a set dollar amount per service, or a coinsurance, which is a percentage of services that you are responsible for.

2. Out-of-Pocket Maximums Restart Too

Just like your deductible, your out-of-pocket maximum also resets in January. Until you reach this maximum, you may experience higher costs for visits or treatments. Once the maximum is met, your plan typically covers 100% of approved services for the rest of the year.

3. Visit Limits Renew

Many insurance plans include visit limit maximums for certain therapies or treatments. These limits also renew at the start of the year. If you previously reached your max number of visits in 2025, you are likely to have access to a fresh set of eligible visits for 2026.

4. Update Your Insurance Information Early

Providing your insurance information at the beginning of the year helps us verify your benefits and submit claims accurately. This prevents delays, billing surprises, and interruptions in your care.

5. Put Services on Hold Last Year? Let's Get You Back on the Schedule!

If you paused a service because you reached your visit limit or needed to wait for the new year, you will be eligible to resume care at the start of the year. Check in with our front desk to get back on the schedule. We're happy to help you restart your routine!

The study: A Systematic Review of Nonsugar Sweeteners and Cancer Epidemiology Studies. Advances in Nutrition Volume 16, Issue 12, December 2025, 100527.  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.advnut.2025.100527

Methods: systematic literature review

Results: “We found no consistent associations between any NSS or NSSs in aggregate and any cancer overall, and no evidence for dose–response.”

Conclusions: “Experimental animal and mechanistic evidence for NSSs does not support human-relevant carcinogenicity or any biologically plausible mechanisms by which NSSs could cause genotoxicity or cancer in humans. Overall, the epidemiology evidence does not support associations between any NSS and any cancer type.”

Funding: ABA [American Beverage Association] provided funding for this paper, which was written during the authors’ normal course of employment.

Conflict of interest: All authors are employed by Gradient, Geosyntec, or the American Beverage Association (ABA). Gradient and Geosyntec are environmental and risk sciences consulting firms. ABA is the trade association that represents America’s non-alcoholic beverage industry. ABA provided funding for this paper, which was written during the authors’ normal course of employment. This paper represents the professional opinions of the authors and not those of ABA.

Comment: This is a classic example of an industry-funded study conducted by industry employees producing results favorable to the sponsor’s commercial interests.  I am particularly amused by the last conflict of interest statement.  It too is a classic example, this time of Upton Sinclair’s famous quote: “It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.”
