The 2020 survey reveals the tremendous effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The APA sounds the alarm, observing this:
We face a national mental health crisis that could yield severe health and social consequences for years to come.
Let's pivot to a simple maneuver that may lower your stress levels. Try chewing a stick of gum. Here are some study results suggesting value in the activity: A randomized clinical trial discovered that students who chewed gum (over a 7 or 19 day period) had lower depression, anxiety, and stress indicators.
In addition, the gum chewers achieved more academic success. The authors concluded that "students should chew gum before exams to overcome stress and enhance exam success."
Other studies provide support for the observation that chewing gum drops stress. For example, a small 2012 intervention study from Cardiff University (Wales) showed that chewing gum reduced stress, anxiety, and depression. In addition, gum chewers had a more positive mood and perceptions of better performance (at work and outside of work, respectively).
Another study provides evidence of a linear dose-response relationship between chewing gum and lower stress levels. Researchers conducted a web-based survey of 388 workers from public sector organizations.
