Now we come to the introduction of Textbook of Medical Biochemistry 8th Edition
It is with great pleasure that we present to our beloved teachers and students the eighth edition of the textbook of medicinal biochemistry. The main framework of the book was kept without major changes, new additions were made, some parts in certain chapters were rewritten. Few teachers wanted the university question types and MC questions to be added at the end of each chapter, which existed in the first three editions but was later removed to reduce pages. To quote: "I suggest that short questions and multiple-choice questions should be included in future editions of the book at the end of each chapter." We have included the same in the topics related to MBBS.
We are confident that this edition will meet the needs of undergraduate students according to MCI recommendations, and will also meet the needs and expectations of biochemistry graduate students. Because the book is clinically oriented, it is recommended for PG students of other disciplines, i.e. H. Pathology/Medicine/Pediatrics etc. Color printing was used to make the book more attractive, easier to record and to emphasize the important parts like clinical aspects/importance and importance of biochemistry. The overall aim of the book was to provide concise yet authoritative coverage of the fundamentals of biochemistry with a clinical approach to understanding disease processes.
The important points in the text that students should remember are in bold italics. We make no claim to perfection. Mistakes/mistakes can creep in through oversight/printing errors. All organisms are built from cells. All animal tissues including humans are also organized from collections of cells. Thus the cell is the fundamental unit of life. If the cell dies, the tissue dies and it cannot function. Modern cell theory can be divided into the following fundamental statements:
Cells make up all living matter
All cells arise from other cells
The genetic information required during the maintenance of existing cells and the production of new cells passes from one generation to the other next generation
The chemical reactions of an organism that is its metabolism, both anabolism and catabolism, takes place in the cells.
Types of Cells
In general two types of cells exist in nature. They are: 1. Prokaryotic cells 2. Eukaryotic cells
Prokaryotic cells
Typical prokaryotic cells (Greek: Pro-before and karyonnucleus) include bacteria and cyanobacteria. Most studied prokaryotic cell is Escherichia coli (E. coli).
Characteristics
It has a minimum of internal organization and smaller in size
• It does not have any membrane-bound organelles.
• Its genetic material is not enclosed by a nuclear membrane
• Its DNA is not complex with histones. Histones are not found in prokaryotic cells
• Its respiratory system is closely associated with its plasma membrane and
• Its sexual reproduction does not involve mitosis or meiosis.
Eukaryotic Cells
The eukaryotic cells (Greek: Eu-true and karyon-nucleus) include the protists, fungi, plants and animals including humans. Cells are larger in size.
Characteristics
It has considerable degree of internal structure with a large number of distinctive membrane enclosed having specific functions
Nucleus is the site for informational components collectively called chromatin
