The Florence-Penrose School District is ending its school year with some good news. The district has been working to improve air quality and ventilation at Fremont Elementary School for a couple of years now. This is a long-standing facility improvement need. In February, they applied for a Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) grant. Recently, they learned that the BEST board has recommended funding for 40 priority projects across the State. The Florence-Penrose School District is 20th on the list, safely in the middle of the recommended list. They stand a very good chance of receiving the funding. This is significant for the district and for Fremont Elementary. The FES air quality and ventilation project is a $7,274,557 project. The BEST grant and ESSER monies will pay for all but $1.4 million of the project. Construction will start immediately following final approval.
Florence Pioneer Museum reschedules, cancels events
When Mother Nature decides to prune her trees in Fremont County, she does it with 12 inches of snow, spotty electrical blackouts and in the middle of May. The Florence Pioneer Museum had to cancel the recently slated Chili and Beer Fundraiser due to the weather. It was disappointing, but, the Museum knew there would be a better day.
And that better day will be July 16. The Museum's regularly scheduled fundraiser, "A Night at the Museum" will be featuring the homemade chili in the homemade bowls and cups by P & G Pottery. For $10, you can have an adult beverage, your choice on a cup or bowl, have it filled with chili and you keep the bowl. Also featured will be the gold reduction history in Florence during the heyday of gold mining in Cripple Creek. The Museum will have a display of the Florence & Cripple Creek railroad, and Sidewinder Sluice, a gold panning company in Florence, will be on hand to talk about panning your own gold. Museum Chili Makers, if you can help the Museum out with your wonderful chili at that time, let the Museum know: 1-719-784-1904.
The Museum regrets letting walk-in visitors and visitors to the new website know that the scheduled Cemetery Tour for June 11 has been canceled. Due to circumstances beyond the Museum's control, the tour cannot be offered this year. But, the Museum wants to take the "can" out "canceled" and create a "Can-Do" event with Manna House of Florence. Manna House needs to restock its canned, boxed and personal hygiene supplies for the summer season. On all Saturdays, through the month of June, every person who brings in a canned, boxed or personal hygiene donation for Manna House, will get into the Museum for free. (The usual admission is $5 per person.)
The new "Oil Field" plaque is up on the north side of the "Jail" waiting to be read. The "Original 19" plat map is still up for those who didn't see it in January and the new "W. Morris Cafky" memorial display has been created to honor one of Florence's most famous train book authors.
Saturdays the Museum opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m. It is located at historic 100 E. Front St. in Florence. Want to donate on a weekday? Bring your donation on in during regular business hours or visit http://www.florencepioneermuseum.org.
