LAKEWOOD -- The Cañon City's boys' and girls' teams competed at the State Track & Field Championships on May 19-21 at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood. Despite a postponement on Friday because of the weather, the team adapted, and finished the weekend strong.

"The season was very successful," Jamie Boring, Cañon City's head track & field coach said. "We had 44 kids out which was nice after the COVID shutdown, and the talent is starting to show back up. Throughout the season, we had kids constantly getting personal records. A lot of kids had good goals and they were reaching them if not every meet, every other meet."

On Thursday, senior Cornelius Henderson finished 18th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.48 seconds. Senior Andrew Hakes finished 18th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.31 seconds. In the high jump, sophomore Wyatt Turner finished third with a jump of 6'5".

"That was just outstanding," Boring said about Turner's jump. "He struggled after the first two meets, he had an injury playing basketball and he was out for three weeks. He had some other obligations with basketball, so I wasn't sure where he was going to end up. My goal for him was at least 6'5" and he accomplished that. He came back strong had a good attitude."

On the girls' side, the 4x800-meter relay team finished eighth with a time of 10:10.91. The team consisted of seniors Julia Nelson, Sydney Baxter, freshman Alexi Till, and sophomore Alissa Rall. Later in the day, Rall also competed in the preliminaries for the 400-meter dash and qualified for the finals with a time of 59.46 seconds.

Because of the inclement weather Friday, the day's events were postponed, and the team was forced to adapt.

"It was very frustrating for the kids, but we just kept a positive attitude," Boring said. "When we found out that we weren't running at all that day we just went into figuring out what we could do to keep busy and keep moving throughout the day."

When the action resumed Saturday, senior Nathan Pontious, finished 10th in the 800-meter with a time of 1:57.54.

On Sunday, Rall competed in the 400-meter finals, finishing sixth with a time of 58.80 seconds.

"She's had a good season all year," Boring said of Rall. "She was constantly working hard to decrease her time in the 400 which she did."

The Tigers 4X400-meter relay team of Nelson, Till, Rall, and senior Emily Till finished 15th with a time of 4:11.90.

While the team is losing state qualifiers, Boring has high hopes for Cañon City next season.

"We do lose 10 seniors with a couple of those being our sprinters," Boring said. "We had some first-year seniors out to that had good attitudes. I think we're going to be relying on our sophomores and our incoming freshmen to step in. There are going to be some possibilities for some of those kids to step up and take some varsity spots."
