Mountain View Core Knowledge School has partnered up with local business owners and community members this year to offer enrichment elective opportunities to middle school students. Principal Karen Sartori said, "Our guest instructors have given our students exposure to sports and activities within the school day that they may not have otherwise been able to experience." Sartori wishes to thank all of the community enrichment instructors who have helped with the program this year.
Kathryn Konicek of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu said she really enjoyed her time with the MVCKS students. Konicek, who is certified to instruct Women Empowered, Gracie Combatives, and Bullyproof programs, pulled from each of these programs in developing the self-defense class for the middle school students.
The aim for students was to educate and empower them to defend themselves if needed, and instill in them an understanding that they are worth defending. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a self-defense system that specializes in what happens when a fight goes to the ground, which can be very scary and uncomfortable. Konicek explained that her goal was to offer students a chance to navigate these scary positions free from risk or fear, in the hope they never need the skills they learned.
Konicek was thankful to offer students a chance to try something they've never had the opportunity to try. She explained, "Novel experiences are great for our growth and development as people, and I wanted to bring the skills I have to offer that to the students at MVCKS. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to come and share and educate as a community member."
