The Florence Pioneer Museum and Research Center has set up a display of medical equipment at the Florence Post Office. There are several pieces donated from St. Joseph's  Hospital when it was located in Florence, a surgery set from Dr. Thomas Davis from Portland and a picture of a Dr. L.L. Percival (and his daughter Helen) who had his office and home at 116 N. Petroleum in Florence in the late 1800s.

On September 10, 1890, there was "An Awful Railroad Wreck" according to the Florence Citizen of the time, 3 1/2  miles east of Florence. A Rio Grande broad gauge engine crashed into the caboose of a narrow gauge train on the same track, telescoping 4 cars together. The cars held sleeping laborers, 42 men died. Several local doctors were called out to help the injured:  Drs. Corwin and Black from Pueblo CO, Drs. Dawson, Palmer, and Craven from Canon City CO, Dr. Eddy from Coal Creek CO, and Drs. Paxton and Percival from Florence CO. These doctors worked into the next day to help everyone.

The FPM will be hosting "A Night at the Museum," July 16, from 4-8 p.m. The Museum will focus on the history of gold reduction in Florence, the Florence & Cripple Creek railroad, and Sidewinder Sluice will be there to talk about panning for gold. Admission is $10 per person and the Museum will be selling home-made chili in home-made cups/bowls, an adult beverage or water.  Guests may pick the cup/bowl they would like filled with chili and will be able to keep the cup/bowl to take home.

Thank you to the community chili makers who will provide delicious chili for this evening. Monies raised during the night will go towards the Museum's newest renovation project, the remodeling of the Lamm O'Mac Research Library (the upstairs). The upstairs has three ceilings: a 1976 ceiling, a 1940 ceiling and an 1892 ceiling. As many who remodel know, when you start on one thing, about 5 more projects can come to light.  The Research Library will need new lighting and HVAC among other projects.

Check out the Museum's newly remodeled website:  www.florencepioneermuseum.org for information on future events like: Tour de Coal Towns in September.
