With more than 60 years of professional experience, Dr. Tchobanoglous has been designated as a professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California Davis, since 1995. Previously, he excelled at the aforementioned university as a professor of engineering from 1976 to 1995, an associate professor from 1971 to 1976 and an assistant professor from 1970 to 1971. Moreover, Dr. Tchobanoglous has been active as an environmental engineering consultant at the University of California Davis since 1995 and an independent consultant in his field since 1970.
in addition to these positions, Dr. Tchobanoglous served as a special consultant for Nolte & Associates in Sacramento, California from 1981 to 1995 and a consultant for the California Water Resources Control Board from 1972 to 1980. In the years prior, he was recruited as an acting assistant professor for Stanford University from 1967 to 1969, a consultant for Metcalf & Eddy from 1963 to 1981 and a sanitary engineer for the Water Resources Engineers Inc. from 1962 to 1963. Dr. Tchobanoglous began his career as a research engineer at the University of California Berkeley between 1960 and 1962.
Before embarking upon his professional endeavors, Dr. Tchobanoglous pursued an education at the University of the Pacific, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering in 1958. He continued his studies at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a Master of Science in sanitary engineering in 1960. He subsequently graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental engineering from Stanford University in 1969. Dr. Tchobanoglous was later presented with honorary engineering doctorates from the Colorado School of Mines, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Technical University of Crete.
Formerly appointed to the technical advisory board for Nishihara Ltd. from 1990 to 2005 and the board of directors for Whitley, Burchett and Associates from 1982 to 2017, Dr. Tchobanoglous has further contributed to multiple panels and committees for the National Water Research Institute, the Aquaculture Project in San Diego, California, the U.S. Senate and the state of California. He is equally prolific with his written works, having provided his wealth of knowledge to various handbooks, textbooks and articles published in scientific journals such as Water Research, Scienta Iranica, Water Reuse and Desalination and Environmental Engineer & Scientist, to name a few. Notably, Dr. Tchobanoglous has conducted more than 625 lectures over the years, with over 450 of these as an invited keynote speaker.
As a testament to his stellar professional efforts, Dr. Tchobanoglous has been honored with the Simon W. Freese Environmental Engineering Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2016, the Frederick George Pohland Medal from the Association of Environmental Engineering & Science Professors and the American Academy of Environmental Engineers in 2016, the Excellence in Engineering Education Award from the Association of Environmental Engineering & Science Professors and the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists in 2012, the Distinguished Service Award for Research and Education in Integrated Waste Management from WTERT in 2004 and the Jack Edward McKee Medal from the Water Environment Federation in 1999, to name a few. Furthermore, he has been recognized as an Elected Fellow of the Water Environment Federation in 2012, a Distinguished Speaker by the University of Miami in 2010, a Distinguished Lecturer by the University of Texas at Austin in 2006, and the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year for Public Service by the University of the Pacific in 1985. Looking toward the future, Dr. Tchobanoglous hopes to continue writing and speaking at conferences within his areas of expertise while advocating for waste water treatment.
