According to study findings, dutasteride mesotherapy was effective and was associated with no serious side effects in a cohort of patients with androgenetic alopecia
David Saceda Corralo, MD, PhD, a dermatology and trichology specialist at Ramón y Cajal University Hospital at the University of Alcala and the Pedro Jaén Dermatology Group in Madrid, and colleagues proposed that 5-alpha inhibitors are an effective treatment for androgenetic alopecia.
"Dutasteride mesotherapy has been proposed as an effective method to improve hair loss and [in] reducing systemic absorption," they wrote.

The current multicenter retrospective study assessed the safety of dutasteride mesotherapy in a real-world setting. The treatment's efficacy was also investigated.
Treatment with at least 6 months of follow-up was the primary inclusion criterion.
The cohort included 541 patients with a median grade of alopecia severity of 2 on a scale of 1 to 5 based on Ebling's scale.
The majority of patients (72.6 percent) received mesotherapy with oral dutasteride every three months. However, 28.5 percent of patients were also receiving oral minoxidil, with less than 10% receiving oral finasteride (5.9%), oral bicalutamide (2.6%), or oral spironolactone (0.9 percent ).
At one year of follow-up, 86 patients (15.9%) were eligible for a safety assessment of mesotherapy as a monotherapy approach. Patients were treated for an average of 17 months.
The majority of patients eligible for assessment (86.6 percent) showed clinical improvement, with 38.4 percent showing significant improvement.
Pain was the most commonly reported adverse event, accounting for 45.5 percent of all reports. There were no serious or sexually harmful events observed by the researchers.
"In real clinical practise, dutasteride mesotherapy was effective in male and female hair loss," they concluded. "The treatment's side effects were mild and self-limiting." This therapy may be an effective option for select patients who prefer not to take oral medication."
