I am writing to you on behalf of my mother. She was on metformin for her diabetes for 5 years. During this time, she had persistent diarrhea. At each of her diabetic review appointments she mentioned this, giving it was affecting her quality of life, but was told to persevere. After 5 years she finally convinced her doctor to change her medication. She is now on sitagliptin. She still has diarrhea, to the point she has no control over her bowels, but has been told by her doctor that sitagliptin is not the cause (diarrhea not being known a side effect for sitagliptin – though my having researched this it is a side effect for 1 to 10% of patients). She has also been told that she has declining kidney function. I have complained to her doctor that persistent diarrhea and declining kidney function is connected (hypoperfusion), but they refuse to accept this informing me that it is down to her diabetes and high blood pressure (which is also being controlled by medication). I have asked her doctor for all the kidney function test to check for myself. However Dr Spry, I have no idea what normal decline for a diabetic patient would be. Would you be able to advise on average figures – I appreciate every patient is different, but just an idea of what you would expect if this is possible. Many, many thanks.
