Early Access to School for Highly Gifted Preschool Children

Highly Gifted Preschool Children may gain Early Access to kindergarten or first grade according to the Colorado state law 22-20-103. The Early Access process is for a few highly gifted four-year-olds ready for kindergarten August 2023 and five-year-olds ready for first grade August 2023. Highly Gifted means children scoring in the top one-tenth percentile; approximately one child in a thousand. These pre-school age children need to meet the following criteria for Early Access August 2023:

● A body of academic evidence indicating 98 th percentile work
● A cognitive abilities test (I.Q.) of 140 or higher
● Achievement testing at the 98 th percentile or higher
● Social, emotional, and fine motor school readiness

The Early Access Process serves the few HIGHLY GIFTED CHILDREN who require comprehensive academic acceleration. Early Access is NOT recommended for the majority of aged four and five gifted children.

If families are interested in this process, they should begin by asking their early childhood or preschool provider if the child is an appropriate candidate for Early Access. If Early Access is suggested by preschool or early childhood providers, families should submit a letter of intent and thirty dollar ($30) processing fee to Shyla Christiansen, Cañon City Schools Gifted Education Coordinator, by February 1, 2023.

For more information, contact Shyla Christiansen, Cañon City Schools Gifted Education Coordinator 719-276-6168.

The Boys and Girls Club of Fremont County will host its 9th Annual "Bowl for Great Futures"
fundraiser on Nov. 19 at Canon City Lanes, located at 2970 E. Main St. It will be a Mixed Team Scratch – Nine Pin No Tap tournament and is open to all ages and skill levels. Money raised will used for the programs and operation of the Club.

Eric Thompson of the Boys and Girls Club is excited about "Bowl for Great Futures" as this is his
first tournament, and it marks one year since becoming the CEO.

He said, "The Boys and Girls Club of Fremont County is about helping the youth in our community achieve great things. Please support our Club on November 19 and assist us in making great futures happen."

The Nine Pin – No Tap format means that a strike is awarded to a bowler upon knocking over
nine or ten pins on their first roll, making it fun for all types of bowlers. Teams can be made up
of any combination of males, females, adults, and youth. Team entry fee is $100 ($25 per
