A "pipe bomb-type" device was discovered at a trash dumping station in El Paso County Tuesday morning, according to the sheriff's office.
Someone called employees at the GFL Colorado Springs Transfer Station, a trash dumping station in the 500 block of Air Lane in unincorporated El Paso County, at 9:45 a.m. and told employees there was a bomb on the property, El Paso County Sheriff's Sgt. Jason Garrett said.
Employees then looked around and found the "pipe bomb-type" device about the size of a shoe box. They called 911, and a regional bomb disposal team was dispatched to the location. The building and street were also evacuated and cordoned off, Garrett said.
The bomb squad was evaluating the device by mid-morning Tuesday. By 11:15 a.m., authorities had not yet determined if it was in fact explosive.
"(They are) starting to dig into what the device is, is it operative or inert, and what they need to do with it," Garrett said. "That's the most pressing matter, making it safe, then we'll start to investigate."
The sheriff's office warned passersby to stay out of the area. Air Lane is a dead-end street off Space Village Avenue to the north of the Colorado Springs Airport.
The area is mostly industrial, with a tractor equipment dealer, the waste station, RV storage and warehouses nearby.
