Editor's Note: This is the Daily Record's No. 5 story of 2022 for Fremont County. The countdown continues through New Year's Eve.
Across Fremont County, work crews were busy this year moving dirt, digging trenches, tearing down walls and razing buildings in preparation for new things to come.
The intersection at U.S. 50 and Four Mile Parkway is abuzz with heavy equipment preparing the foundation and infrastructure for a new Love's RV Park. The nearly 52-acre lot located at the eastern entrance to Cañon City is slated to include an RV park, hotel and travel plaza.
The first phase of the project will include earthwork to accommodate the components of the development and the first physical construction will be the underground gas, water and sewer lines. After that, the travel stop will go up, which will include a convenience store and gas and diesel pumps that will accommodate light-duty cars and trucks and RVs.
The second phase of the overall project will be the RV park.
"Love's is a very conservative, successful organization; they don't do things haphazardly," said Rob Brown, the executive director of Fremont Economic Development Corp., who also is the project representative, in October. "They do things that will assure their success and that is what I really admire about them - their professionalism and their dedication to the details. Everyone in the community can rest assured that as they move forward, this is going to be a premium effort."
Also this year, a new Natural Grocers opened in April at 121 N. 16th St.
By 8:15 a.m. on opening morning, dozens of people already were waiting in a line spanning two city blocks, despite the frigid wind.
"From what I've heard, this is unprecedented," said Katie Macarelli, manager of Public Relations, regarding the store's opening.
Natural Grocers offers fresh produce, supplements and dietary vitamins, body care products and free nutrition information to support a healthy lifestyle. The store had been highly requested by residents for the last several years.
In June, work began on the preparations for 13 single-family homes in Planning Area 1, the north side, of the Scholastic Planned Development District.
LWD Partners purchased the north end of the 7.5-acre property and will be responsible for building and developing the houses. According to the plans, an alley will line up with the existing one just west of Planning Area 1 of the Scholastic Planned Development District.
Six single-family homes will be on the north side of the new alley, facing Floral Avenue, and seven single-family homes will face south on the other side of the alley. The development will be part of an association.
Located in the center of the property on the east side, Unbridled has purchased the historic building and chapel, which will be tied in with Hotel St. Cloud just a few blocks down Seventh Street.
The Hotel St. Cloud's newly renovated bar, Fremont Public House, will open Friday. This Unbridled company marks the completion of Phase 1 of the Hotel St. Cloud restoration.
"It's Cañon City with speakeasy vibes," said Lindsay Wyss, the Chief of Staff for Unbridled in Fremont County. "We've restored the original bar to showcase and honor its history while bringing a unique, modern flare to the space."
Additionally, the iconic K-Bob's restaurant, located at 3103 E. U.S. 50, was razed this year to make way for a Les Schwab Tire and the former Holiday Motel at 15th and Main streets soon will be torn down for a Kroger gas station.
