Wimbledon's greatest-ever singles champ Martina Navratilova announced that she's been diagnosed with two forms of cancer.
Martina Navratilova, 66, who won Wimbledon a record nine times, said she's been diagnosed with throat and breast cancer after discovering a swollen lymph node in her neck in November.
The Czech-born American, who's married to former Russian beauty queen Julia Lemigova, 50, said that this double whammy was serious but still flexible and that she was hoping for a favourable outcome. She said that it was going to stink for a while but that she will fight it with all that she's got.
The former world number one's diagnosis comes after she was given the all-clear from breast cancer in 2010 following radiation therapy.
Martina Navratilova, who won 59 grand slam singles and doubles championships over the course of her 40-year career won't travel to this month's Australian Open, where she was planning to work as a TV pundit.
But a statement from Martina Navratilova's representative described the prognosis as good and said that Martina had been diagnosed with stage one throat cancer, that the prognosis was good and that Martina will begin her treatment this month.
Her representative said that the cancer type was HPV and that this particular kind reacts really well to treatment, and that Martina noticed an enlarged lymph node in her neck during the WTA finals in Forth Worth, and when it didn't go down, a biopsy was conducted, the results came back as stage one throat cancer.
And that at the same time as Martina was undergoing tests for the throat, a questionable form was discovered in her breast, which was later diagnosed as cancer, totally unrelated to the throat cancer, and both these cancers were in their early stages with great results, but that Martina wouldn't be covering the Australian Open for Tennis Channels from their studio but expects to be able to join in from to time by Zoom.
Martina Navratilova, who was born in Revnice, Czech Republic, and was one of the first openly gay sports figures, won a record nine Wimbledon singles titles between 1978 and 1990 in a career which saw her dominate tennis with 18 total Grand Slam titles.
As she approached her 50th birthday in 2006, Martina Navratilova chose to retire from professional tennis after her final Grand Slam, a mixed doubles championship with Bob Bryan at the US Open. She became the most senior player to ever win a Grand Slam title during that match, and I'm sure the entire world will be rooting for her.
She's an incredible woman who has in the past been harshly treated by the woke media, and I hope she fights this with all her strength and triumphs.
Of course, it's human instinct to try not to die, therefore, you fight in order to remain alive, and for someone who has cancer, it's scary because it's a life and death situation but you deal with it, however you can and that's called 'bravery'.
