A man has been arrested in the double homicide investigation of a Howard couple.
In a press release Saturday morning from the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, authrotieis stated that Eric Michael Escobedo, 41, was arrested by Douglas County Sheriff's deputies. He was arrested without incident and has been transferred to the Fremont County Detention Center.
Escobedo faces two counts of first-degree homicide, two counts of crimes against an at-risk adult, burglary and menacing. He was identified through the use of forensic DNA analysis.
Deputies discovered the bodies of Carl Cooper, 83, and Susan K. Cooper, 75, in December 2022 after being dispatched to the area for a report of a structure fire in the 4000 block of County Road 4 near Howard.
Deputies were dispatched to the 3800 Block of County Road 4 for the fire, and while conducting a neighborhood canvas, a deputy located a residence in the 4000 block of County Road 4 with an open door. When the deputy approached the door, they saw what appeared to be a person down on the floor with obvious injuries, Fremont County Sheriff Allen Cooper said in a press release.
"The deputy entered the residence to render aid but determined that individual to be deceased," he said. "A second body, also with signs of trauma, was also located."
Escobedo is the owner and resident of the structure that was burned in the 3800 block of County Road 4. He was located at the scene of the fire by Fremont County deputies and was suffering from burns and exposure, Cooper said.
He was transported to the Heart of the Rockies Clinic in Salida for treatment. Escobedo was later released and arrested by Salida Police for an assault that occurred at a homeless shelter.
In December, Cooper said the FCSO was waiting on digital forensic evidence and fingerprints.
