Starting June 21, Wednesdays from 5:30-7 p.m., the Senior Center in Florence will start dance lessons for all adult ages, couples or singles. No serious judgmental lessons, just bring your two left feet or one left and one right if want to learn or improve yourself with the coolest dances on the planet. The better you are, the more fun dancing becomes. Learn to dance basic easy moves or become a dramatic showoff.
Instructor: Freya and her partner won numerous rock n roll dance competitions and danced on stage at Elvis shows. Think American Bandstand dancing. Her partner still rock n rolled until age 94 to the end of life, but Freya can teach super easy ways to make you stand out on the dance floor, and most of all, have fun. She will stay with the basics of three major dances that cover the major variety of dancing in the world.
50's Rock n Roll, mixed with Jive, Jitterbug, Lindy Hop from simple moves to lifts, jumps, way too cool swings and jive, from easy-going, slow and pretty on the ground, or however far you want to take it. People believe a fast rock n roll is difficult and crazy. Not so. Although it looks fast, the lady moves as fast or slow on her own and the partner only guides her. With any dance, it's more than just steps that make a dance special. It's the improvisation, posture, look, even the outfit and expression make the dance. It's all about fun and what you enjoy, how far you want to take your dancing and kicking it up a notch and even put your own spin on a dance. Remember that all dances started with someone trying something different. There are no rigid expectations of a formal dance contest.
Basic American Tango steps are mixed with improvisational informal street dance and are not difficult. The class will remain with basic steps and a few combinations and focus on the drama that Tango is all about. Here is your chance to playact.
Blues Dancing is mostly slow and super expressive with no formal prescribed steps going back to early Jazz days. Think Etta James singing "At last".
The Mountain Blue Band will be playing at the Florence Senior Center on Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m. for those who want to join the fun afterward. A $3 donation per person suggested. Here is your chance to practice or just visit. The band will play a mix of music and may play your requests. Come join regardless of being a member.
Lessons include easy exercises for any age to strengthen muscles, gain balance, and improve flexibility to become stronger, healthier, and confident. You might even reduce those aches and pains of life. Lessons at the Florence Senior Center are $3 per person donation. You do not have to be a member and can be any adult age. The Senior Center would prefer a reservation but you can show up without. Please call Karen at 719-431-3778 at the center or 719-429-5577. Be sure to leave a clearly spoken message.
