Welcome. Many of you have traveled very far, from within the United States and from around the world. Among us are deans of medical and nursing schools, directors of higher medical institutions, and leaders in medical education and research. Among us are also incredibly generous donors, leaders in countless fields, talented nursing staff, and community leaders. Here in this room, we collectively hold a spectrum of skills and contributions that comprise the Global Health Academy.
Tonight we are celebrating a concept that grew gradually and finally flourished into the Global Health Academy. We now have the human power and resources to materialize the concept of restructuring global health education.
This academy will strive to become an exemplary center for creating an empowerment model in global health. It is designed to prepare graduates for a firm commitment to their home institutions and to serve as agents of change in medical education. The recognition as international educators and leaders through their position at the academy, in addition to longitudinal support that the program offers, will encourage faculty to stay in their home communities where they are needed most. These individuals will ultimately serve as an army of educators who can mobilize worldwide to sites of need, creating LIC-LIC collaboration and empowerment. Together, we will connect people around the world in the joint mission of reducing the burden of disease in the world's most vulnerable populations through the enhancement of health education.
Our network's activities in global health serve as defining elements for our academic mission and evoke a form of humanity that stimulates a selfless commitment to care for patients everywhere. By elevating global health to an academy, we acknowledge and support its essential place within the global community.
Thank you to each and every one of you for helping me along this path and bringing this dream to fruition.
