Expanding Access to Quality Care: The Impact of Nonprofits in Oncology

It's no secret that cancer is EXPENSIVE, which can make accessing care extremely challenging for some patients.  While various solutions are available today, one of my favorite organizations meeting these needs & expanding access to quality care is Moving Beyond Cancer Collective.

Mari Galle, an oncology acupuncturist based in Austin, Texas, shared her journey and the inspiring work she does on TheOncoPT Podcast. Alongside her team, Mari has been instrumental in establishing the Moving Beyond Cancer Collaborative, a nonprofit organization aimed at providing accessible and holistic care to individuals affected by cancer.

The Birth of the Nonprofit:

After experiencing a temporary closure due to COVID-19, Mari saw an opportunity to channel her energy into a project she had always wanted to pursue – starting a nonprofit. Having ordered countless books and resources on nonprofit management, Mari and her team successfully established the Moving Beyond Cancer Collaborative as a 501(c)(3) organization in December 2020. Their vision was to address the gaps in oncology care and provide support to a broader population in central Texas.

Filling the Gaps in Oncology Care:

As an oncology acupuncturist, Mari understood the financial burden that cancer can impose on individuals and families. Recognizing that not everyone has insurance coverage or can afford the cash rates, Mari and her team were determined to create a system where no one would be turned away. By offering sliding-scale payment options and donation-based treatments, they aimed to provide accessible and affordable care to those who needed it most.

Expanding Access through the Nonprofit:

Through the Moving Beyond Cancer Collaborative, Mari and her team have been able to expand their reach and offer a variety of services beyond the clinic walls. They provide 12 free exercise classes weekly, catering to the specific needs of cancer patients and survivors. Whether it's yoga, Pilates, cardio, or guided meditations, these classes aim to improve both physical and mental well-being. The nonprofit also offers scholarships for massage and skincare treatments to address the unique challenges faced by cancer patients in these areas.

The Power of Collaboration:

Mari emphasizes the importance of collaboration with other nonprofits and organizations in the oncology care space. By working together, they can fill in gaps and provide comprehensive support to individuals affected by cancer. The Moving Beyond Cancer Collaborative seeks to continue collaborating with other entities to create a unified and inclusive approach to care.

Looking Ahead:

While the Moving Beyond Cancer Collaborative has achieved significant milestones in just over two years, Mari has even bigger dreams for the future. She envisions the organization expanding its model to different parts of the country, establishing chapters that can replicate the success seen in Austin. By providing care and support through trained professionals, Mari believes that the model can be easily implemented to help individuals nationwide.

The Moving Beyond Cancer Collaborative, spearheaded by Mari Galle and her team, is making a remarkable impact in the field of oncology care. By addressing the financial barriers and offering accessible services, they are ensuring that no one is left without the care they deserve. Through collaboration and a commitment to expanding their reach, the nonprofit is paving the way for a more inclusive and holistic approach to cancer support. With their ongoing efforts, the Moving Beyond Cancer Collaborative is truly making a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.

Until next time, this is Elise with TheOncoPT. And remember: you are exactly the physical therapist that your patients with cancer need. So let's get to work.
