Title: Program Director for School Support
Company: Atlanta Public Schools
Location: East Point, Georgia, United States

Alisha Lyas Torres, the program director for school support at Atlanta Public Schools, has been recognized by Marquis Who's Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of education.

Long dedicated to service on behalf of the underprivileged and ensuring access to an exemplary education for all students, Ms. Torres has distinguished herself through her role as a program director for school support at the Atlanta Public Schools since 2021. In this capacity, she coaches principals and leadership teams in their efforts to improve upon the classroom experience. Likewise, she works diligently to foster an atmosphere of diversity, equity and inclusion in the instructional environment.

Leveraging more than 25 years of experience in a variety of pre-kindergarten and post-secondary educational settings, Ms. Torres previously served throughout most of her career in various administrative roles at the Fulton County Public Schools, where she worked as an assistant principal at Sandy Springs Charter Middle School from 2013 until 2015 and Paul D. West Middle School between 2015 and 2018. Prior to these roles, she availed herself as a curriculum specialist at Mary D. Bethune Elementary School from 2001 to 2012, having begun as a classroom teacher in 1997. Outside of these efforts, Ms. Torres also found success as the principal of the Atlanta Youth Academy from 2008 to 2021, and as an adjunct professor at Thomas University in 2017.

Ms. Torres first sought an education at Clark Atlanta University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in early childhood education and teaching in 1997. Following this accomplishment, she went on to study further at Georgia State University, graduating with a master's degree in 2000. Ms. Torres subsequently attended Columbus State University and received an Educational Specialist degree in educational leadership and administration in 2011. Well-qualified in her field, she has been further certified in early childhood education and educational leadership through the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, and in principal supervision by the Relay Graduate School of Education.

Among her most cherished achievements, Ms. Torres is most proud to have been invited to speak by Atlanta Public Schools prior to her employment there. She had received a request to address the topic of opening schools during the COVID-19 pandemic, and was surprised to find herself given the opportunity to speak on a district platform and panel, through which she shared her insights on the challenges involved with school reopenings. The accomplishment held significant value for her, as she had yet to attain a prominent role within the district or establish herself as a published professional. In accounting for her overall success, she credits the singular focus she wields in wanting to change the world. Looking toward the future, Ms. Torres aspires to establish an independent school network – one that is devoted to those who lack a voice in mainstream society and is willing to address the inequities that have long had a stranglehold on education.
