She is additionally active as a lecturer of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the Charter College of Education at California State University, Los Angeles as well as an adjunct professor of literacy, Spanish methodology and assessment at Loyola Marymount University. Prior to these positions, Ms. Fried served as an English language development teacher at the University of Valencia in Spain.
Before embarking on her professional path, Ms. Fried pursued an education at San Francisco State University, from which she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and public speaking in 1968. She concluded her studies at Pepperdine University in 1984, graduating with a Master of Science in bilingual cross-cultural education. In addition to these accomplishments, Ms. Fried obtained her certification in Spanish at the University of Salamanca and as a bilingual cross-cultural specialist in bilingual education and Spanish at Pepperdine University.
In light of her impressive undertakings, Ms. Fried has accrued several accolades throughout her career. Acknowledged as the first bilingual teacher at the Sierra Vista High School, she was eponymously honored by the Baldwin Park Unified School District with the renaming of the aforementioned high school's library at the Charlene Fried Library. She was likewise recognized as the Teacher of the Year by the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) in 1997, the Teacher of the Year by the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) in 1998 and the Woman Educator of the Year by California Senator Susan Rubio in 2023. Featured in EdSource Magazine in 2021 and 2022, Ms. Fried was notably presented with the Corazon Award from the Association for Bilingual Education in 2016 and an Award from the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) in 2020.
Ms. Fried attributes her success to her exceptional students, who won the CABE and NABE essay writing contests in three consecutive years. She is incredibly proud of having handled multiple responsibilities in her present positions at Sierra Vista High School, California State University, Los Angeles and Loyola Marymount University. Among her most exceptional accomplishments, she fondly recalls being present for her students and guiding them towards success, especially those who have overcome so much as English as a Second Language speakers. Looking toward the future, Ms. Fried is planning to volunteer with CABE following her retirement while simultaneously planning on traveling around the world and continuing to write in her spare time.
