A Broomfield man charged with murder in his wife's death had been impersonating her ex-boyfriend and stalking her for months before killing her, according to an arrest affidavit filed in the Broomfield County Combined Court.
Daniel Bartholomew Krug, 43, is facing first-degree murder, stalking and criminal impersonation charges in the Dec. 14 killing of his wife, 43-year-old Kristil Krug, at their home in the 3100 block of Promontory Loop in Broomfield.
Daniel Krug called Broomfield police just after noon Dec. 14 to ask for a welfare check on his wife at their home. He said he hadn't heard from her for several hours and was worried following months of her being stalked and sent obscene and potentially threatening messages that were apparently from her ex-boyfriend, according to the affidavit. Police later found evidence that Daniel Krug had been the one stalking and messaging her, pretending to be her ex-boyfriend.
Police found Kristil Krug beaten and stabbed, and she later died at a hospital.
The affidavit said there was no sign of a struggle and police found Kristil Krug's concealed-carry weapon on her body, leading them to believe she was killed by someone she knew or was taken by surprise.
Daniel and Kristil Krug had been married since 2007, according to the affidavit, but they were planning to divorce. Kristil Krug had told her parents her husband was "sometimes rough with the kids," and that she would seek full custody.
Kristil Krug had gone to police on Oct. 31 to complain that an ex-boyfriend, who had previously sent her rude and sexual messages in the past, had started sending her similar messages in October, according to the affidavit. She reported the messages to police on Oct. 31 because she received an email containing a picture of Daniel getting out of his vehicle at his workplace that included an obscene message.
In November, she received several emails with personal information about her that gave an accurate location of where she was at the time.
She received text messages with explicit photos and more propositions, including one sent Nov. 13 that said, "Help me get rid of him then we can be together," referring to her husband, according to the affidavit.
Kristil Krug received at least two more emails propositioning her in December before the day of her death.
The officer who found her beaten and stabbed in the garage noticed the camera on the house's doorbell system was taped over, and a review with Daniel Krug of other security cameras Kristil had installed showed three of them were turned off most of the morning, according to the affidavit.
He could not explain why they were turned off.
Broomfield detectives then received IP address data for the phone numbers and emails her ex-boyfriend supposedly had used to contact her and determined they originated from Daniel Krug's workplace, according to the affidavit.
Broomfield officers also confirmed that the ex-boyfriend was in Utah, not Colorado, on the date of the killing, according to the affidavit.
In a police interview on Dec. 14, Daniel Krug denied killing Kristil Krug, saying he left their house for work that day later than usual because of "unexplainable stomach trouble," according to the affidavit, and he and his wife interacted when she returned from taking the kids to school but didn't argue shortly before he left.
Broomfield police arrested Daniel Krug on Dec. 16 at a Broomfield King Soopers. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 22.
