A veteran and his/her family in Fremont County will be the lucky recipients of a new, free roof in early 2024, thanks to AmeriPro Roofing.
Larry Roybal, the local sales representative and an 18-year Florence resident, hopes that the company's first year of the Roof Deployment Program in Fremont County will yield enough interest to keep it going in the coming years.
"We will definitely find a deserving veteran," Roybal said. "This is going to be hard because there are so many deserving veterans and we are allowed to do one."
Sponsored by Owens Corning, the largest shingle manufacturer in the U.S., the program is coordinated in conjunction with AmeriPro Roofing and Habitat for Humanity.
Though Roybal is still somewhat new to AmeriPro, he leaped at the opportunity to bring a free roof to a Fremont County veteran, beginning two weeks ago.
"It was around Veterans Day and they [my coworkers] had mentioned that they had done this Roof Deployment Project [in Colorado Springs] and it seemed like a great idea to me," Roybal said. "When we got done with the meeting I asked my branch manager if they had done one out here and they hadn't."
Fast forward two weeks and Roybal is the primary touchpoint for the program and was tasked with developing both interest and knowledge of the project.
The process is a simple one. Those who wish to nominate (or self-nominate) a veteran only need to pick up a paper copy of the nomination form and one of the following locations, fill it out, and return it to any of the pick-up locations before Dec. 15.
Cañon City pick-up locations:
- Golden Age Center, located at 728 Main St.
- Royal Gorge Chamber Alliance Office, located at 424 Main St.
- Cañon City Habitat for Humanity, located at 727 S. 8th St.
- Cañon City VFW, located at 215 N. Cottonwood Dr.
- New Horizons Thrift Store, located at 3170 E. Main St.
Florence pick-up locations:
- Florence Senior Community Center, located at 100 Railroad St.
- Big D's, located at 1100 E. Main St.
- Florence Chamber of Commerce Office, located at 105 N. Santa Fe Ave.
- Florence Elks Lodge, located at 131 E. Front St.
Penrose pick-up locations:
- Penrose VFW, located at 402 S. Broadway.
- Neighborhood Market, located at 307 Broadway.
After the nomination forms have been collected, Roybal and a panel of board members will conduct interviews with each nominee, a screening process will also be pursued, and roofs will be inspected. Potential claimants must have been honorably discharged from the military and have a clean record, free of any felony records.
"Most people probably know a veteran and probably a lot of them know a veteran that would be deserving of a new roof," Roybal said.
He anticipates that a roof recipient will be chosen by the dawn of the new year and AmeriPro plans to begin work on the lucky home once the weather warms enough for safe working conditions.
