As the semester comes to an end, so does my time as an Chancellor's Undergraduate Research Fellow. I would like to take this moment to reflect on the transformative experiences that have shaped my understanding of the research process this semester. Throughout this journey, two qualities have emerged as fundamentals to being a researcher in my opinion: patience and resilience.
Many times I found myself doing quite basic and routine tasks in the lab such as weighing animals and preparing their food. These tasks seemed detached from the grand narrative of research and I often wondered if I am truly contributing to research or not? However, enlightening conversations with my mentors allowed me to broaden my horizons and encapsulate the bigger picture. I began to envision how the rehabilitation techniques we test could potentially revolutionize post-traumatic brain injury care for real patients. As a pre-medical student, this realization sparked immense excitement and fascination in me, reshaping my perception of seemingly mundane tasks as crucial steps in an impactful endeavor.
For aspiring researchers or newcomers to the field, I emphasize the significance of every action within the lab. Each minute task contributes to a collective pursuit of making the world a better place. Upholding patience and resilience is paramount on this journey, sustaining the vision until the day it materializes into tangible progress.
One of the highlights of this semester was my visit to the Fredrick's Honors College Undergraduate Research Fair. Witnessing the various projects being conducted as well as the continuum of research, from its current state to its envisioned path forward in the coming semester, was truly inspiring.
Looking ahead, my aspirations for the next semester orbit around presenting our ongoing study at the Spring Undergraduate Research Fair. Engaging as a research presenter will not only fortify my public speaking skills but also deepen my comprehension of the research through interactive discussions and addressing inquiries from enthusiastic participants.
Furthermore, I am eager to explore additional fellowships offered by the University's Honors college. These opportunities promise avenues for growth, allowing me to diversify my academic pursuits and expand my horizons as a researcher.
Every little step of this journey—small tasks, enlightening conversations, and aspirations for the future – show promise for a growth filled and exciting journey ahead in regards to research. With anticipation and enthusiasm, I eagerly embrace the opportunities that await, fostering my evolution as a dedicated researcher committed to catalyzing positive change.
