It's unusual for a location to be dedicated to a singular type of business as the decades pass, but that's exactly what's happening at 504 Main St., Studio G.
The name of the game in the quaint, relaxing studio is yoga and has been for many years. Studios such as River Lotus Yoga, once owned by Robin Beals, and Kula Yoga Studio G, once owned by Donna Jones, have stood at the same location. Now, new owner and enthusiastic yogi Cynthia Lippmann looks forward to her turn at the well-known location when she opened Cañon Yoga.
The assumption might be made that ownership has changed several times because of the difficulty of the industry, but the truth is that many of the same instructors and yoga lovers have populated the studio for many years and each owner has brought her own flavor and passion to the room.
Lippmann found her way to Cañon City in late 2021 after serving as a teacher for 40 years in Nevada and, almost immediately, pursued her love of yoga by attending classes at Jones' Kula Yoga Studio G.
"I came into yoga kind of late in life," Lippmann said. "I had taken dance classes before but, as I got older, I needed something different."
Lippmann found immediate friends at Kula Yoga Studio G, and when she discovered that Jones was considering selling the business, she found that she had all the right questions to ask.
"Although I've volunteered from the Blossom Festival and am a member of Fremont Adventure Recreation, I wanted to really ground myself in the community," she said.
She figured there was no better way to do that than to own and run a business.
Although the first six months of ownership had its sharp learning curves, Lippmann has enjoyed the challenge and loves interacting with her 10 dedicated instructors and clients. Although each instructor has a distinct teaching method, Lippmann knows that even the most inexperienced yogi can partake in any of her classes.
"Our teachers walk you through the steps [of different positions]," she said.
Upon taking over the studio in October, Lippmann wanted to accomplish exactly two things with her work at the studio, which included creating a warm and welcoming environment for participants (check) and expanding services to the wider community.
In order to bring yoga to more Cañon City residents, Lippmann and her instructors hope to establish more class times outside of working hours (particularly for busy working parents) and continue to reach out to the community.
"I'm still learning about Cañon, but I have too much energy to hold still," she said with a smile.
Restorative, strengthening and the more difficult Hatha forms of yoga are all available throughout the week and pricing begins at $10 a class (though there are packages available for the more dedicated yogi).
