Sevus!
Now that I've settled back in the states, I have had the opportunity to fully reflect on the time I spent in Germany. While I was there, I had the opportunity to experience Bavarian culture and learn about the German manufacturing and automotive industry. With company visits and collaborative projects, I even had the chance to work with German students on developing new business ideas to address the needs in the automotive industry. The trip was a fantastic experience and I'm excited to share what I learned and how it changed my perspectives!
My time in Munich was jam-packed with cultural, educational, and sightseeing experiences. Throughout the entire trip we worked with German students on multiple different exercises and projects. For example, we worked with two different groups of students during a workshop to learn hands-on how lean production principles can help workflows within manufacturing plants. My favorite workshop is when we made rideable toy cars! We had a whole system set up and were able to make 6 cars in less than 4:30 minutes.
We also had a project with German students where our challenge was to combine American and German views on car buying to create a solid business case. We proposed an event that included presentations, activities for kids, and showcases of new EVs to ensure that Gen X buyers stayed in contact with the dealership after they had bought a car. This project really showed me how different perspectives can lead to creative solutions.
Besides our project work, we visited several companies, attended interesting seminars, and went on cultural trips (my favorite one was actually to Salzburg). We even took a cooking class! These activities not only deepened my understanding of the German business world but also gave me a greater appreciation for the country's rich history and lively culture. Whether exploring the busy streets of Munich or visiting the calm Bavarian countryside, every moment was a learning experience.
Personal, Academic, and Professional Growth
I feel as though this trip helped me grow a lot personally, academically, and professionally. The experience helped me gain a sense of independence and confidence in myself, especially after college. From having to navigate around the city to budgeting money for food, shopping, and sightseeing, I had to manage myself well. Academically, as a bioengineering student with a minor in industrial engineering, I don't often get to explore manufacturing principles and business technologies. This experience filled that gap, allowing me to apply what I've learned in class to real-world situations, enhancing my understanding and appreciation of my field. Professionally, I feel reassured with my current professional plan. I gained insights into how businesses operate in Germany, which broadened my perspective on international business practices. This experience reinforced my interest in business development and gave me the confidence to pursue this path further.
I am very grateful to the University of Pittsburgh, the bioengineering department, the SSOE Global experiences office, the Fredreick Honors College and my parents for making this unforgettable experience possible. The lessons learned and the connections made in Munich will undoubtedly shape my future endeavors
