A Fremont County judge on Monday determined the Cañon City man who escaped from the Fremont County Detention Center on Friday afternoon is a flight risk and a risk to community safety.
During an advisement hearing, Judge Alexandra Robak set two separate cash bonds for Kegan VanVliet, 45, at $500,000 and $100,000.

Cañon City police officers arrested VanVliet in the 300 block of North Raynolds late Wednesday night after an hours-long search. He was held on suspicion of Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder in the First Degree, Possessing a Dangerous or Illegal Weapon, Possession of a Defaced Firearm, Defacing a Firearm, Prohibited use of a Weapon, Illegal Discharge of a Firearm, Possession of a Weapon by Previous Offender, Special Offender, Unlawful Distribution and Domestic Violence.
VanVliet escaped from the Fremont County Detention Center just hours before he was set to attend his initial advisement at 3 p.m. Friday. He was apprehended Saturday morning.
Fremont County Undersheriff Derek Irvine said details on the escape and apprehension will be forthcoming later this week.
On Monday, Robak said she had not signed off on the probable cause affidavit for the original case as there were charges that the court was unclear about regarding the argument on probable cause.
She found that there was not sufficient probable cause found in the PC affidavit for three of the charges including Possessing a Dangerous or Illegal Weapon, Defacing a Firearm and Illegal Discharge of a Firearm.
However, Robak noted his "significant criminal history" including 13 failures to appear in the last five years; 12 felony convictions including two separate prior convictions for escape; 15 or more misdemeanor convictions including numerous convictions relating to controlled substances and other domestic violence-related convictions.
A risk assessment and bond-setting assistance tool indicates that on bond, VanVliet has a 54% likelihood of success; a 74% likelihood of public safety; and a 66% likelihood of court appearances.
Conditions of bond include no drugs or alcohol, monitored sobriety, relinquishment of a passport and GPS monitoring.
VanVliet is slated to appear for filing of charges on June 26.
