Lady Huskies rally late for 17-11 win at Woodland Park

By Carie Canterbury on September 25, 2024

Florence's softball team scored in every inning on Tuesday at Woodland Park but needed its biggest frames late to pull out a 17-11 victory. The Lady Huskies trailed 10-7 after four full innings but began the comeback with a two-run fifth. They followed that with a four-spot in the sixth to take a 13-10 lead. FHS tacked on four insurance runs in the seventh and then held the Lady Panthers to just one run in the bottom of the frame to seal the win.

After allowing three runs in each of the first three innings, the pitching was nails, only allowing two runs over the final four innings. The scoreless fifth and sixth were key to the come-from-behind victory.

Claire Bosley recorded three legs of the cycle at the plate, needing only a home run to complete it. She scored four times. Makala Miller had three singles, driving in two runs. Lilly Roe led everyone with five RBI. Trinity Villagrana and Kendra Steffenson scored three runs apiece.

Addison Dalton went the distance in the circle, earning the victory despite allowing 11 runs. Due to 15 errors, only three were earned. She allowed six hits, walked four, and struck out a dozen.

The Lady Huskies are 7-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Tri-Peaks II league. They will host CaƱon City on Thursday in the Bat Game. CCHS has won 12 of the last 14 meetings in the series, including the last nine consecutive.

Florence volleyball wins league opener with La Junta

Florence hosted La Junta on Tuesday night in the league opener for the Lady Huskies. They got the victory on the night but needed four sets to beat the one-win Lady Tigers.

The Lady Huskies came out and got a quick 2-0 lead in the match, winning the first two sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-21. La Junta prevented the sweep by fighting back for a 25-23 win in the third. As it turned out, that only prolonged the inevitable, as FHS controlled the fourth set, 25-12, to take the victory.

Callie Church (nine) and Kaylyn Vittetoe (six) combined for 15 of the team's 27 kills on the night. Caidee Campbell served up eight aces and Makayla Buehring added seven. Naomi McWilliams led the back row defense with 20 digs, while Adalina Yeager tallied a dozen. Campbell was credited with assists on 24 of the 27 kills.

The Lady Huskies are 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Tri-Peaks. They visit Salida on Thursday for another league match.
