The goal of this study was to see if aromatherapy might help with menstruation discomfort in early adolescent females with primary dysmenorrhea.
Study Design: Pre-experimental research design with a quantitative methodology.
Saveetha College of Nursing, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Chennai, from December 2019 to February 2020 is the location and duration of study.
Methodology: A convenience sample strategy was used to choose sixty teenage females for the study. Adolescent females aged 17 to 19 years old who had a regular menstrual cycle, had primary dysmenorrhea, and were willing to engage in the study were included in the study. A systematic questionnaire was used to collect demographic and clinical information. On the 5th day of menstruation, a pre-test evaluation of primary dysmenorrhea symptoms was conducted using the primary dysmenorrhea symptoms questionnaire. For two consecutive menstrual cycles, aromatherapy was provided by inhalation on alternate days beginning on the 7th day of the menstrual cycle. The same technique was used to administer a post-intervention test on the first day of the menstrual cycle. Using the SPSS statistical tool, the data were tabulated and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
The study found that 54 percent of women reported moderate menstrual misery and 6 percent had severe menstrual distress in the pre-test. In the post-test, nearly all (100%) of the women felt minor menstrual discomfort. The pre-test and post-test mean menstrual distress scores were 62.832.93 and 33.03 2.48, respectively. The paired 't' test indicated that the post-test mean value is lower than the pre-test mean value, and that this difference is statistically significant at the p0.001 level.
Conclusion: The results of this study show that lavender oil aromatherapy is beneficial in reducing menstrual discomfort without causing adverse effects in teenage females with primary dysmenorrhea, as well as lowering the risk of pharmaceutical intervention.
