The gemological parameters, as well as a combined spectroscopic (FAAS, FTIR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) identification of natural and heat treated opals recovered from the principal deposits in North Wollo, Ethiopia, are presented in this paper. The gemological measures, FTIR, and XRD spectra for natural and heat treated samples are essentially equivalent; however, FAAS shows distinct colour variations, which might be attributable to metal concentration variances. Both of these microcrystalline opals had spectra and diffraction patterns that were characteristic of Opal-CT, with strongly defined patterns and prominent peaks in the 2 range of cristobalite and tridymite.
