A vertebral compression fracture is a type of spinal disorder that may cause due to arthritis, osteoporosis, and trauma. These disorders slowly worsen the health of the spine and limit the movements in the patient's spine. The common treatment options are vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty.

Vertebral compression fractures are painful and more prevalent in elderly patients. The majority portion of the patients suffering from vertebral compression fractures needs non-operative management along with bracing and pain management. Several companies have invested in finding more effective, less invasive methods to treat vertebral compression fracture. Commonly, patients with bone marrow edema and persistent back pain benefit from vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty and the procedure takes not more than 3 weeks.

According to Allied Market Research, the global vertebral compression fracture devices market is expected to reach $1.90 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 8.1% from 2021 to 2030. Rise in the geriatric population, surge in incidence of arthritis, and osteoporosis, and increase in patient awareness regarding developments in spinal surgeries have boosted the market growth.

Rise in the geriatric population, shift toward minimally invasive spine procedures, and surge in prevalence of spine disorders have boosted the growth of the global vertebral compression fracture devices market. However, unfavorable reimbursement scenarios hinder the market growth. On the contrary, untapped potential in the emerging market is expected to open new opportunities for the market players in the future.

What is vertebroplasty?

Vertebroplasty is a minimally-invasive treatment. The treatment includes injection of medical-grade bone cement via a needle into a vertebral body. As the cement hardens, it stabilizes fractures and strengthens the weakened bone. This treatment is found to be effective for most patients. From patient to patient, the number of injections varies. The patient is constantly monitored during the entire procedure and when the open spaces are filled, the need is removed. The entire process takes less than an hour but for the patients with a severe vertebral compression fracture, multiple fractures are treated in the same session.

What is kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty or vertebral augmentation is also a minimally-invasive procedure in which the cavity is created within the vertebral body and then the bone cement is injected. Similar to vertebroplasty, the cement hardens quickly to strengthen the bone. The process is done by inflating a small, medical balloon in the vertebral body which in most cases helps restore the original alinement of the spine.

Patients with one vertebral compression fracture tend to heal completely but those with multiple fractures need more care and treatment. Often when there are multiple fractures are involved, the focus is more on the prevention of further injury. However, the usefulness of medication and treatments is much better at preventing further injury rather than treating the injury that has already occurred.

The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented global public health challenge and is anticipated to have a negative impact on the vertebral compression fracture devices market. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic slowdown has materially impacted the demand for vertebral compression fracture devices, which are used in procedures that are considered elective for the treatment.
