Introduction: In East Africa, familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an uncommon diagnosis. The author describes a case of a 21-year-old male who had blood-stained stool on occasion and was diagnosed with familial adenomatous polyposis coli. Following that, a review of the pathophysiology, clinical characteristics, and treatment options for FAP in East Africa is presented.
This patient arrived with a rectal tumour, blood coloured faeces, and a significant family history of familial adenomatous polyposis. The procedure included a complete proctocolectomy and ileoanal anastomosis. This patient's surgical recovery was unremarkable.
On the resected colorectal material, the usual gross pathological and histological characteristics of familial adenomatous polyposis and rectal cancer were seen. In addition, this study examines the literature on familial adenomatous polyposis coli's clinical presentation, pathological features, and therapeutic choices. Conclusion: In a young patient with a significant family history of CRC, FAP should always be considered. Patients with early symptoms, as well as those with a significant family history of FAP, should have a colonoscopy. A proctocolectomy and Brooke ileostomy will not be a desired option in a young kid in East Africa since the formation of a permanent stoma is considered inappropriate.
