This is far overdue, but I wanted to take a few moments and thank the Canon City School District!  I must say right off the bat, the resiliency and drive of administrators, as well as this incredible staff, is simply remarkable.

Having my wife as part of this district has allowed me to see exactly how proficient and loving, yes loving, our staff and students truly are.  It goes without saying that these last couple of years have been a challenge like none other, yet staff and students showed up, did a phenomenal job and marched forward.

Was everything perfect, no way, will it ever be, no way, that's not the point.  The point is simply that when you see the hearts of our district employees wrap around students, tough times, tough decisions and teach like no other district in the state, you have perfect … oh, I know it's got ways to improve, but don't we all!

When you are blessed to see students learn how to read for the first time, count, and, yes, decide on career paths, to see the confidence light up their eyes is simply a miracle.  As teachers, you don't get to choose who comes in knowing what, or if they show up at all.  You get to teach everyone that shows up no matter the circumstances. It's awesome how students who might already know things help others and even more awesome how teachers teach how to help others.

Oh, then you have our bus drivers who make sure kids get to school in the first place, custodians who keep the learning environments clean and ready to teach, nurses and kitchen staff who always have an eye out for students in need, counselors who guide and direct our students, secretaries always getting things done behind the scene, and the principals who never really leave the buildings … oh, maybe physically, but their brains are always working to help kids!!  It's a system that makes me marvel because it's ever-changing and educating future adults to help our world!

Let's not forget about how the buildings are cared for, maintenance and grounds, amazing to watch so much get done all the time, and never really even think about the fact that it's super hard work.  Thank you.

I don't want to forget our administrators, administrative assistants and school board.  They are constantly looking for ways to improve, bring about necessary change, and ebb and flow with times that truly have never been seen.  Yet, the job is getting done, the way we all want it…most times, but remember you have an opportunity to run for the school board and help, too!

So, to our school district, and everyone that makes it possible, thank you from the bottom of my heart for choosing to help, learn, teach, transport, grow, heal and enrich our kids to make educated citizens of the United States. You are without a doubt, some of the most incredible people I know!  We truly all hope you have a wonderful new school year.

Shad Johnson,
CaƱon City
