A woman died Saturday when she fell from an escalator at Empower Field at Mile High at the end of a Kenny Chesney concert, according to Denver police and the stadium.
The woman was sitting on a railing of the escalator when she fell to the concourse below and died as a result of her injuries, according to police. The incident happened at about 10:52 p.m., police spokesman Nate Magee said. Empower Field said in a statement Sunday that the woman died "at the end of Saturday's concert."
"We extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the woman involved in the tragic incident," the statement said. The woman has not been identified and Magee did not know her age. He also did not know how far she fell or whether she was taken to a hospital or died at the stadium.
Police first announced the death just after 11 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, they described the woman as a "guest" at Empower Field and said her death is being investigated as an accident. Magee said Sunday he did not know whether alcohol was a factor in the fall but said he believes the woman was not pushed or jostled before she fell.
"To my understanding there was none of that, it was just an accidental fall, I don't think anyone pushed her or anything like that," he said, citing witness accounts.
Doors opened for the Kenny Chesney concert at 4 p.m. Saturday, with the event scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
In a statement Sunday, Chesney said: "I was devastated to learn of the loss of someone after our show. There had been so much joy, so much heart coming from the people of Denver last night – and to hear this is heartbreaking. Life is precious. Sharing music brings us together and that love we share makes us so much more. For the lady who came to share that love, there are no words. For her friends and family's loss, I grieve with them and for them."
