Roman W. DeSanctis, MD, Honorary Physician and Director of Clinical Cardiology Emeritus at Massachusetts General Hospital, has been recognized by Marquis Who's Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in cardiology.

With more than 60 years of professional experience in medicine, Dr. DeSanctis has excelled since 2014 as an honorary physician and director of clinical cardiology emeritus at Massachusetts General Hospital. From 1970 to 2014, he was a physician at the same institution, and from 1981 to 1998, he was active as the director of clinical cardiology. Beginning his career at Massachusetts General Hospital as an assistant physician in 1962, Dr. DeSanctis advanced to an associate physician in 1968 and served as the founder and director of the coronary care unit at the institution from 1967 to 1981. Alongside his primary roles, he authored the second edition of "On Being a Physician" in 2020, co-authored "The Practice of Cardiology" in 1989 and co-authored "Cardiac Clinicopathological Conferences of the Massachusetts General Hospital" in 1972. Dr. DeSanctis also contributed his knowledge as a contributor to articles published in professional journals.

In preparation for his career, Dr. DeSanctis graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude, in 1951. In 1955, he obtained a Doctor of Medicine, magna cum laude, from Harvard Medical School, after which he completed an internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital between 1955 to 1960. From 1960 to 1962, he was a clinical and research fellow in cardiology at the same institution. Dr. DeSanctis was recognized for his professional excellence with an honorary doctorate from Wilkes College in 1984. Alongside his formal degrees, he is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine as well as the organization's sub-board on cardiovascular disease, credentials he earned in 1960 and 1971, respectively.

Dr. DeSanctis is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades for his accomplishments as a physician and medical professional. In 2016, he received a Partner Excellence Award, and in 2006, he earned a Trustee's Award from the Massachusetts General Physician's Organization. In 2003, he received the Glorney-Raisbeck Award from the New York Academy of Medicine and the Master Clinician Award from the American Heart Association. To keep abreast of his field, Dr. DeSanctis is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American College of Cardiology, the New York Academy of Medicine, the American Clinical Climatology Society, the Association of American Physicians and the American Heart Association. From 1979 to 1980, he served as the president of the New England Cardiovascular Society. In his spare time, Dr. DeSanctis enjoys golfing and traveling.
