According to an early Sunday morning Facebook post by the Cañon City Police Department, officers were passing by the 1300 Block of Woodlawn when nearby residents got their attention regarding shots fired that had occurred in the area.
An investigation revealed that a lone suspect was recorded on video, "looking into cars and opened fire into a vehicle to gain access to an unsecured firearm that was left in a locked vehicle."
The firearm was stolen and the suspect reportedly fled north on Yale Avenue, just before officers were flagged down.
Officers are requesting the community's help in the case. Nearby citizens can check their doorbell cameras and other surveillance footage that may have captured the suspect on video. Those who discover a recording of the suspect in question, call the Cañon City Police Department at its non-emergency phone number (719) 276-5600.
According to a 2023 Colorado Crime Statistics study, nearly 29,000 items were stolen from vehicles throughout the state, a downward trend from 2022. However, officers recommend removing items of any value from vehicles at night.
"We would also like to take this opportunity to remind the public not to confront people committing these types of crimes as they may be armed," the release read.
"Also, please secure your firearms in a manner that is consistent with law. Colorado law now requires that firearms stored in vehicles must be secured in a locked container," the release continued.
